International students enrolled at the UvA are entitled to use the Student Medical Service if they are properly insured. If you do not have insurance, you must pay per consultation. These fees do not cover the cost of prescriptions. Check with your insurance company to find out how your medical costs are reimbursed.
International students from European countries can apply for a European Health Insurance Card, which simplifies the process of receiving medical assistance during their stay in a European Union member state. For more information about health insurance, see the link below.
It is important to keep the Student Doctors informed if you change or renew your insurance policy. Also, please notify us if you move away from the Netherlands, so that we can keep our register updated. Refer to Health insurance information

Student Doctor services
Students of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) are all entitled to make use of the services of the Student Doctors, who have specific knowledge of student life. The Student Doctors provide these services in collaboration with the Oude Turfmarkt GPs. There is no ‘district limit’ in place for students: you can use the services of the Student Doctors regardless of where you live in Amsterdam.

Making and cancelling appointments
Appointments can be made on workdays by telephone or at the front desk. It is also possible to ask a medical question on the phone. In order to arrange this, call the office and a doctor will call you back at an appointed time.
You must give at least 24 hours notice in order to cancel an appointment. Otherwise, you will be charged. You will also be charged if you show up late, or miss your appointment altogether. To cancel an appointment in English, call our office.

Office hours
If you need to discuss more than one issue, you may need to make a second appointment. If an appointment lasts for more than 20 minutes, you will be charged double, in compliance with national regulations. The different kinds of office hours are described below.

Consultations by appointment
You can see the doctor by appointment during regular office hours and on Monday and Thursday evenings. You can make an appointment by calling the office (at 020 525 2878 or 020 525 4772) or coming to the front desk at Oude Turfmarkt 151 on workdays.

House calls
House calls are made on workdays at the end of the morning and in the afternoon. House call appointments must be made by telephone, preferably before 12:00.

Telephone consultations
There is a call-back office hour. On workdays before 12:30, you can call our office to request to be called back by a doctor. The assistant will ask you to provide a short description of your problem.

Traveling vaccination office hour
Vaccinations are administered by appointment. You can book an appointment through REISPRIK. We recommend that you come and get vaccinated at least five weeks before departure to a tropical destination.

Assistants’ office hours
The doctors’ assistants hold open office hours from Tuesday to Friday between 14:00 and 16:00. They provide only the following services:

  • removal of stitches
  • checking urine for a bladder infection

Renewing a prescription
Patients who are registered with the Student Doctors/Oude Turfmarkt GPs can renew prescriptions by telephone. These are prescriptions that you have received before. The prescription will be ready at the front desk of Oude Turfmarkt 151, or faxed to the pharmacy of your request, within two working days. The normal fees for renewing a prescription apply. It is only possible to renew a prescription in this way when you have specifically arranged with the doctor to be able to renew it upon request.
If you request to renew a prescription, the doctor will assume that your health has not changed since the last time the medication was prescribed. Examples of changes in health include breast feeding, pregnancy and the use of drugs not prescribed by the Student Doctors. If you are in doubt as to whether your health has changed, please contact us.

Changing doctors/transferring your file
If you decide to change doctors, it is important for the continuity of your health care that your new doctor have a copy of your medical file. You can request the Student Doctors to forward a copy of your file to a different doctor’s office, at which point we will remove you from our patient registry. If you still have an outstanding balance, you will need to pay it before your medical information will be forwarded. If you would rather that certain information not be forwarded to your new doctor, please make an appointment with us to discuss it. Refer to Changing doctors form (in Dutch)
